Author John Ronald Ruel Tolkien
Theme/Genre Fantasy/Heroic Epic
Synopsis The story takes place during the Third Age of Middle Earth wherein the Ring of Power has been passed to Frodo Baggins of the Shire. The Great Enemy (Sauron) has discovered that his ring is found and stops at nothing to recover his most precious possession. With the aid of Gandalf's council Frodo sets out of the Shire, his long time home, to begin a most perilous quest to the Village of Bree. In Bree Frodo Meets Strider the unknown heir to the throne of Gondor. Strider takes Frodo and his Hobbit companions to Rivendel, sanctuary of the Elves. From Rivendell the Great Fellowship of the Ring is assembled for one quest: to accompany Frodo, as far as they may, in the hopeless journey to Mordor and Mount Doom where the Ring is to be destroyed. The Fellowship is frought with difficulty and dangers of the most epic sorts, eventually losing two of its members to death: Gandalf and Boromir. The Fellowship breaks when Frodo and Sam leave for Mordor on their own. Pippin and Merriadoc are captured by Orcs. Gimli and Legolas, lead by Aragorn (Strider) track the Orcs to save their friends from torment and death. Gandalf returns with more power and authority to aid the defense of Minas Tirith (the last great stronghold of men). Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Pippin and Merry all do their best to aid in the defense of Minus Tirith, but all is futile unless Sam and Frodo are able to destroy the Ring. Through impossible odds and amazing adventure The Ring is finally destroyed. Aragorn takes his right place as King of the United Kingdoms and ushers in a period of peace and prosperity unknown since the Elder Days. Frodo, Gandalf are among those who travel West bringing an end to the Third Age.
